Manufactured from steel with a matte blued finish, this mag cap retainer is for the FN SLP, Browning Gold, Silver, A-500R, A-500G and Winchester Super X2 and Super X3 12 gauge shotguns. This mag cap retainer is perfect as a replacement piece or for the next workshop project and will keep your shotgun in top operating and reliable condition. Please note, this piece is for 12 gauge models only.

Browning A-500 History

The A-500R shotgun was introduced in 1987 and discontinued in 1993. It was a short recoil operated model.

The A-500G shotgun was introduced in 1990 and discontinued in 1993. This was a gas-operated model.

Historic Information (1987-1993) Serial Number Info

In 1976 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998.

  1. A-500R Type: 751=A-500R
    A-500G Type: 351=A-500G
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.

A-500 R Serial Number Example:

751PR01001

This would be an A-500R shotgun, manufactured in 1987 with the serial number 01001.

A-500G Serial Number Example:

351NM01001

This would be an A-500G shotgun, manufactured in 1990 with the serial number 01001.

The production of the Gold semi-automatic shotgun began in 1993. The Gold 10ga. is the only Gold Gun still in production.

In 1976 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998. The Gold 10ga. went into production in 1993. This gun is produced in Japan and uses the following serial number configuration until 1998.

  1. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Gold 10 ga. Type: R91=Gold 10 ga

Gold 10 ga. Serial Number Example:

01001NX191

This would be a Gold 10 ga., manufactured in 1993 with the serial number 01001.

1994-1997

The Gold family of 12 and 20 ga. shotguns was introduced in 1994. They are produced in Belgium and used the following serial number configuration until 1998.

  1. Gold Type:
    F51=Gold 12 ga. Hunter
    FT1= Gold 12 ga. Sporting Clays
    F61=Gold 20 ga. Hunter
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.

Gold 12 & 20 ga. Serial Number Example:

F51NW01001

This would be a Gold 12 ga. Hunter, manufactured in 1994 with the serial number 01001.

1998

In 1998 Browning redid the standardization of its serial number identifications to work with its new data base program, Oracle. This is followed to the present day. With the Gold 10 ga. being manufactured in Japan, its serial number configuration is:

  1. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Gold 10 ga. Type: 112=Hunter and Stalker

Gold 10 ga. Serial Number Example:

01001NP112

This would be a Gold Hunter or Stalker, manufactured in 1998 with the serial number 01001.

1998

I purchased a Browning Gold Hunter and it had several worn parts. This was one parts that it needed. The old cap retainer was missing all together!

These are factory Browning parts. They are what I expected them to be. If I had one complaint it would be they were much cheaper in price when I could buy them directly from Browning. Midwest has raised the price considerably. But when no one else has them, you can charge what you want.
