The latch assembly releases cartridges from the magazine. On a high round-count gun, the spring in this assembly can weaken, resulting in feeding problems. A symptom you see is the breech bolt release button will not pop out when the gun is cycled manually. If there is no damage to the latch assembly itself, you will still need to remove and replace the entire latch assembly to get at the source of the problem: a worn cartridge latch spring.
