Browning BAR History

The production of the BAR high power rifle began in 1967 and lasted through 1992. The BAR Mark II series was introduced in 1993 and is still in production.

Historic Information Serial Number Info
1967-75

In 1969 Browning started using two digits for the date of manufacture:

M=BAR High Power Rifle

This was then followed by the serial number beginning with 1000.

Example: 69M1000 = A 1969 BAR High Power rifle with a serial number of 1000.

  1. BAR Mark II Type:

Replaced along with a sure cycle regulator and the rifle is much smoother than with the old one. Went from two and a half inch group to just under an inch. I believe it was because of the regulator, but the rifle is smoother now and for that I am pleased. Just need to say the old regulator when measured is about .120 and I believe the original one is about .080. Had to be the difference.

I bought a used BAR 30-06. It would shoot 1 maybe 2 rounds then "click". Took it all the way down,cleaned it spotless with a toothbrush, then installed the kit when I put it back together. The gun has shot a couple of boxes flawlessly. I'm ready to take it hunting.

This was a much needed upgrade. The old spring was over a inch shorter from wear. This kit was cheaper then a stock replacement and easier to find thanks to MGW.

Purchased the BAR cycle kit as I attempt to ensure proper cycling of 30-06 BAR. The Sure cycling kit was easy to install and fit as expected. MGW has a good selection of replacement parts and provided a very quick shipping. I have completed the rebuild but have not had a chance to test the rifle as of yet.

This is a good upgrade for all of us who own an older model BAR. It’s not hard to do if you pay attention. The new recoil spring will be an inch or so longer than the one you remove. Make sure you replace the neoprene buffer that is included.
